Martin’s start in the industry traces back to his childhood in the town of Dundas Ontario, where his father would take him to financial planning seminars at the local public library. This was his first real-life experience with the role that money plays in household finances, and it sparked an interest that continued through high school and university. Upon graduating he knew that helping people with their money is what he wanted to do.
Setting goals, defining risk and managing expectations -and the range of emotions that come with the subject of money, are all part of his approach to his client’s investments. With 28 years of experience in the industry, his goal is to deliver a better client experience.
Know Your Money is more than a turn of phrase at First Capital Financial, it’s a motto and Martin uses an education-based approach to helping clients understand their current financial situation and where they want to be in the future. He believes that if clients have a fundamental grasp on both, they will have peace of mind knowing they are financially secure for what comes next in their lives.

With a family background in accounting and finance, Garth finished his Bachelor of Commerce degree at McMaster University in 1994 and has been working in the financial service industry since 1996. He immediately set out to complete a certificate program in financial planning from the Canadian Association of Financial Planners and then became a Certified Financial Planner® professional after completing the examination process at the Financial Planner’s Standard Counsel in the year 2000.

This, along with own experience raising a family and running a business has led to the development of a planning process that provides clients with an experience that is miles beyond simple charts and spreadsheets.
When Garth is not working, he spends his time with his teenage sons and continues to run, bike, and swim as he prepares for his first Ironman triathlon.
